African developers release open source virtual classroom
Richy on 02/05/2009 at 5:44am (UTC)
Avoir is a a collaboration of 13 African universities specialising in creating free software relevant to African users.

The virtual classroom application allows presentations to be uploaded in PowerPoint or
OpenOffice format and made available online as well as embedded in websites or blogged.

The Realtime Tools allow the presentation to be picked up and given live on the site, in a realtime virtual classroom setting.

The developer on this project is David Wafula, a masters student at UWC and a staff member of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology and a member of the AVOIR unit there.

“Most notable in this release,” says Wafula, “is the improved easy-to-use interface,
which runs in its own window as opposed to using embedded applet used in version 1.0.0.”

The latest release allows presenters to share desktop applications in real time with other participants. Importing presentations into the the application is a one-click operation. The virtual classroom software also allows users to import graphics as well as transfer multiple documents.

Downloadable versions of the software will be available in Debian, RPM, Java and Windows executable formats. The Debian version is currently available.

Users can test drive the software online on the demo site.

AVOIR project leader, Derek Keats of UWC, says that this is the first application of its kind in the world that is free software. “It demonstrates the remarkable, world class talent that we have in Africa and what can be achieved when we collaborate to accomplish something.”

Bringing you the first ‘Rwandan Computer’

KIGALI- Rwanda, famous for its gorillas and 1000 hills, has something else to be proud of. This time round it is the combination of the gorillas and the 1000 hills but has nothing to do nature’s beauty but rather more to do with electronic innovation. It is the Gorilla 1000.

Students in a computer lab. Rwanda is experiencing growth in the ICT industry.
Gorilla 1000 is non other that the 'Rwandan Computer'- the first of its type, made by Rwanda Network Computers (RNC).

According to Mr Robert Rwubaka, RNC Marketing Manager, Gorilla 1000 is the epitome of a combination of Rwandan entrepreneurial spirit and genius.

He says that the computer comprises of a Rwandan built motherboard (which is the heart of a computer) and other imported accessories. “In effect we are making computers. We have a team of experts, both locals and from India,” he explains. He said that hey decided to name the computer Gorilla 1000 because (a gorilla is a strong animal and the 1000 stands for 1000 hills Rwanda is famous for.”

Rwubaka says that RNC is engaged in training of 55 local hardware and software developers some of whom are demobilized soldiers. “We have a team of expatriates from India training locals. Our aim is to have our very own indigenous Rwandans as the backbone of computer manufacturing.

Some of them have finished the training and are undergoing a final phase in software configuration,” he says.

He adds that after training some technicians will be taken in while others will be encouraged to begin their own businesses.

He says that the firm, which produces about 100 computers per day and assembles other computer accessories like printers, is yet to eye the export market. “We are still bent on satisfying domestic demand. But we are also looking for a Comesa license to open branches all over the Comesa region in the near future,” he says. He also says that they are in consultation with a company in Burundi to open up another branch called Burundi Network Computers.

He adds that RNC has as its major aim to bring down the cost of accessing computers. “Our computers now go for between $600-$700 including Value Added Tax but we soon hope to bring this down to about $300 in future when we have expanded and taken advantage of economies of scale.”

He adds: “By reducing prices we shall be creating increased access to ICT and increased ability to take advantage of benefits accruing from ICT. We are helping in fulfilling vision 2020 targets of universal access to ICT within next 16 years.”

He says that other than reducing the cost of computers, RNC is helping creating job and train a strong base of Computer experts.

Makerere University embraces Technology

Makerere to help build world’s cheapest car

Richard Wanambwa

KAMPALA

STUDENTS of Makerere University's Faculty of Technology are to take part in developing the world’s cheapest car. The initiative is a collaborative project between the University and German scientists.

Speaking at the University's 57th graduation ceremony yesterday, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Livingstone Luboobi, said students at the faculty will partner with those in Germany to produce the cheapest car ever.
The car, according to the university publicist, Mr Gilbert Kadilo, will be electro driven instead of fuel driven.

The announcement comes less than a month after Tata Motors, the Indian automobile giant, released the world's cheapest vehicle at India's biggest car show in the capital Delhi.

The vehicle, called the Tata Nano, costs $2,500 (Shs4.2 million) and will enable those in developing countries to upgrade from two to four wheels.
Neighbours Kenya, in the mid 1980s, established a pioneer car firm under the Nyayo Pioneer Car project.

A 1992 study on how to restructure the Nyayo Car Project revealed that additional billions of Kenyan shillings were needed to set up production units. The independent study also questioned the project's viability and pointed out that there was no market for such a car.

Prof. Luboobi stressed that it had been envisaged that since the car will be electric driven, Makerere students would help develop the wiring system. He, however, did not explain to what extent the university students would help in manufacturing the car, or where the actual assembly would take place. The graduation ceremony, which started yesterday, marked the start of weeklong graduation ceremonies that will, for the first time, be held under a decentralised system.
Students will graduate according to their faculties.

Yesterdays' ceremony saw a total of 547 students being awarded postgraduate degrees and diplomas. Of the 547 students who graduated, six got doctorate degrees, 443 masters while 98 obtained Postgraduate Diplomas in various disciplines.

At the end of the week, a total of 5,584 students will be conferred upon doctorate, masters, bachelors, post graduate diplomas as well as diplomas.
According to Prof. Luboobi, Makerere is also about to transform from a faculty based to a college-based University. Thus the colleges will have autonomy over their operations with the mother Makerere University being a figure head.
"The College of Health Sciences, already approved by the National Council for Higher Education, brings together the Faculty of Medicine and the School of Public Health.

Prof. Mondo Kagonyera, the newly crowned University Chancellor, reminded lecturers of the enormous task “to transform them into useful citizens."

"Discipline must be top on your agenda and you must lead by example" said Prof. Mondo, adding that despite the negative publicity the university has suffered over the years, it remains the most prestigious university in Uganda.

"However, if this vintage position is to be maintained, there is certainly need for improvement or even a complete overhaul of certain ways that have come to haunt the university,'' he said.
